Poker is a German game, which first introduced players to the suits as we know them: hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades. Of course, being able to carry away a large pot in a sack, called a poke from 14th century English, the name of the game thus evolved. There are hundreds of different versions of poker, but they share the same commonalities. They all use all the cards in the deck, and they all respect the same progression of winning hands.
The three most popular versions are: Texas hold'em, 7 card stud, 5 card draw, with most of the variations based off of these three main styles. Whether you win or lose, you need to make sure you walk out of a room without having made enemies or embarrassed yourself otherwise you might not get invited back. Do not taunt other players when you are up or cry when you lose. Jeep your emotions to yourself. Your composure is very important.
Although you can play almost anywhere, many people are learning to play in the safety of online websites. Even if you are not playing face to face, keep your head in the game do not walk away from the computer half way through a hand, as others will often be waiting on you and become annoyed if you slow down the pace of the game. Also, many sites allow you to pass comments to other players - although you should stay in the spirit of the game, you should avoid saying something you wish you could later take  more open and talkative, chatting with the other players while the game is played. This can work to not only distract the players from the game and breaking their concentration, but it serves to open up more closed players.
