Sit and go tournaments are one of the more popular types of poker tournaments. It is a specific type of tournament. These are set up all over the world and there are as many as 180 participants in some of the competitions. The competition always takes place at a scheduled time and all the participants must have to purchase the chips in order to be part of the game. The only condition is that once the game starts no new players will be added. The chips that are bought are usually equivalent to the amount of money you pay. The chips are only of value in the game and cannot be used anywhere else. Usually the sum of money you pay is the same sum of chips you are given but in some competitions the organizers can deduct a sort of a participation fee to put towards the payment of all the arrangements made. In a sit and go, all the players start off with the same amount of chips, this way all of them start of on the same level.
Before the game begins the participants are divided into groups of equal players. Each table also starts off with the same number of players. Once the game begins, the player or players on each table to lose all their chips is eliminated. This is the reason why this competition is called a knock off challenge. Once the chips are over the player must leave the table. This competition's rules are strict about the use of anything other than chips for the betting process. No player is allowed to bet anything other than the chips allotted - no cash, no personal effects, nothing.
Some competitions allow 'Re-Buys'. This means that the player can buy more chips to remain in the game. If the player loses all his chips he can have the option of buying more chips giving him a further chance to keep playing. In some venues if you are running low on chips too, you are allowed re-buys. Most venues set a specific number of re-buys that are allowed. This is done to ensure that players with deep pockets do not keep prolonging the competition. In some places the organizers even allow for add-ons. This means that even if you are playing really well and have enough of winnings you still can buy chips to increase the bets on the table. This is done to make the competition more heated.
Another common practice in these competitions is to increase the antes and the big and small blinds on the table at regular intervals. The intervals are usually set at 15 minutes. The antes and blinds are basically forced bets that the players have to make. By increasing the forced bet amount the game gets more competitive and more heated.
The winning in this game is the same as in all poker games. The last player at the table holding all the chips is the winner. The winning player can cash-in the chips and receive the money the chips are worth, or the organizers can set winning prize money.
